Animal Farm Compared To The Russian Revolution :: compare contrast

Training isn't as unmistakable in the book as during the Russian Revolution. In the book, training is referenced when Snowball discovers old spelling books, when having a place with Mr. Jones. He starts to show himself, trailed by different pigs, lastly he encourages different creatures to peruse and compose. A portion of the not all that smart creatures discover this very burdening, while the pigs†being the most savvy, become familiar with the quickest. Snowball is the most keen on teaching the animals, and the prosperity of different animals on the homestead. Similarly as Trotsky was goal in instructing the Russian individuals, and their prosperity during the Revolution. â€Å"Napoleon looked into Snowball’s boards. He said that instruction of the youthful was a higher priority than anything that should be possible for the individuals who were at that point developed up.† This shows Snowball’s promise to the creatures contrasted with the uninterested Napol eon. In the book Napoleon started his influential position very well, with his thoughts being reasonable and with a positive importance. As the story proceeds with he turns out to be progressively degenerate, and his thoughts transform into a fascism. â€Å"Napoleon lead the creatures back to the store-shed and served out a twofold part of corn to everybody, with two rolls for each dog.† As time went on his actual nature, of a force insane character starts to surface, he turns out to be increasingly narrow minded and the guideline thought of uniformity does not exist anymore. The ranch is run on dread, and no animal dare stand up against him, inspired by a paranoid fear of death. â€Å"The news spilled out that each pig was getting a proportion of a 16 ounces of bear every day, with a large portion of a gallon for Napoleon.† Similarly as during the insurgency, when from the outset Stalin was reasonable and only however as he was given force he transforms into a degenerate man with tyranny characteristics. He turned out to be progressively narrow minded and evil. While making sure about his capacity base he built the perpetual outcast of Trotsky. This looks at to the book, when Napoleon and his ‘nine strong puppies’ drove Snowball out of the ranch. Napoleon at that point continues to depict his actual nature of a professional killer. Snowball is the other fundamental pioneer in animalism, close by Napoleon. He was the person who was generally inspired by the prosperity of the creatures and their instruction. The direct inverse of Napoleon. I fell on the off chance that he had not been pursued away (killed) at that point the possibility of socialism may have succeeded.

Jails papers As everyone of America ages, so do its prisoners. It is anticipated that continuously 2010, at any rate one of every ten will be age fifty or more established. In Florida for instance, the development pace of geriatric prisoners as of now surpasses that of the more youthful detainee. The purpose behind this scourge is somewhat because of harder long haul condemning rules, coming about because of the get intense on wrongdoing effort. In view of these long sentences, seniors are packed in penitentiaries well past their extents in non military personnel open. Detainment facilities can lose considerable prosecution costs if heath care projects and concerns are not met. The more established prisoner will likewise should be isolated from the more youthful detainee who conceivably could overwhelm a geriatric detainee without any problem. As the administration battles with the issues of older detainees, the issue is just deteriorating. The making of the supermax jail is because of the present risk of the grown-up male jail circumstance. These penitentiaries are packed to the point of risk and are driving organization to act. As a result of harder condemning rules, and longer sentences, the detainment facilities have topped off without a turnover rate that facilitates the swarming issue. Next House Showers Bring No Flowers

Next House Showers Bring No Flowers Its hard to remember a time during my senior year of high school when I wasnt totally jazzed about MIT. I got accepted, and that was pretty much it for me. I was going to MIT. I never really entertained any possibility that there might be some cons to the pros to me, MIT was perfect. This is a bad attitude to have in all regards, because while its great to be excited, you forget that theres no such thing as perfect. My friends at Stanford write me long, tormented emails about their foods likeness to recycled cardboard; a girl I know at Berkeley calls me to complain about how her halls TV only plays in Spanish. I myself found MITs imperfections when I moved into Next House (not to mention that you cant switch out of Next if you move here in your first year but thats a story for another time). We may not have fire alarms going off every month, but anyone living at Next House will tell you horror stories about our terrible, TERRIBLE showers. They have absolutely no pressure, so the water dribbles on you like its from a crack in the ceiling. Not only that, but the Next residents seem to lose all realization that they share the sanitation station with ten or so others the minute they get wet, and think its okay to leave the entire contents of their shower onto the pa rt of the floor without a drain. At Next, you must swim before you shower. Often times the aforementioned residents also think its okay to leave enough hair pooled around the drain to make you think theyd shaved a small cow. Perhaps worst of all, we receive emails about every month telling us theyll be shutting down all the hot water yet again to fix some eternally elusive water problem. Guys on my hall make arrangements to stay at their fraternities these nights; others (probably the people who leave puddles) think its not too much a price to pay to stay stinky for the day, at everyone elses expense. Sometimes we dont even get warning about hot water being shut off. The morning finals began, specifically on the morning of my 8.01 final that I was certain I would fail, I stepped into the shower to be greeted by water of temperatures like that of the San Francisco bay. Not a great way to start off a three-hour exam. But dont listen to me. Zach Ozer (Zozer) 07, chairman of The Tech, can probably tell you about it better than I can. Heres an email he sent out to Next Forum, our mailing list, about a week ago: Does anyone remember how, when the elevator broke at BC, everyone affected got a refund of $25 in TechCash from LarryBens Cookie Fund (http://www-tech.mit.edu/V125/PDF/N16.pdf)? Since Ive been here, I cant even count the number of water shutdowns. But I almost can :) Here are my records… anyone with more complete records, please, by all means fill in the blanks. Total Shutdowns (Hot, cold, or both): May 13, 2005 August 17, 2005 September 23, 2005 October 27, 2005 January 4, 2005 July 25th, 2006 August 23-24, 2006 September 13, 2006 October 17, 2006 December 8th, 2006 January 10, 2007 January 30, 2007 Partial (1+ bathroom afftected) April 11th, 2005 September 9-26, 2005 Nov. 8th, 2005 Dec 6, 2006 Jan 11, 2006 If you read this as I do, were averaging 5 complete shutdowns per year and 2.5 partial shutdowns. If your car broke down for a day 5 times in a year and wasnt performing right 2.5 times per year, youd be able to return it under a lemon law. Can we return Next House? No. But someone from NextExec should raise hell about this. Now, Im not saying that there might be some reason to why that guy I had to stand next to in chorus always smelled like old yogurt. MIT does have excellent showers in its other dorms (some of which have their own bathroom per room) and especially at the Z Center (they have great pressure!). But as someone who likes to enjoy a hot shower every morning, Im almost definitely moving to another dorm next year. So to sum up, dont get tunnel vision; your dream school most certainly isnt going to be flawless. Im here to share the wisdom I gain from college with you, so here it is: dont be shocked when you get there to find everythings not always puppies and rainbows. And pressurized hot showers. The Breaking Of Barriers By Elisabeth Israels Perry

The Americas Dashawn Austin The Breaking of Barriers Women were such central forces in the progressive era and the increase of social cohesion mainly because they were everywhere. They were really dedicated when it came to their jobs, at home, and in their community. Whether them working as domestic workers, in farms, at a factory, or studying at school, women were basically in all areas that required labor intensive skills. They held jobs in manufacturing, offices, classrooms, and stores.Women were also known as strong, central forces in society because of their hard work and determination. A barrier seen through the Progressive Era was Gender Equality and Power. A woman s treatment before that time, according to the magaz ine article â€Å"Woman’s Home Companion† by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, was identical to slaves. The women of the late 19th century to the early 20h century had, â€Å"... not only no voice in the management of the country, but she had no control of her property, earned or inherited;no control of her own children; no control of even her own person...† Gilman even goes further saying, â€Å"If that is not a condition of slavery, it bears a close resemblance to it.† Indeed it does. It is shown that these women were being restricted of their natural human rights, trapped and maybe even confined in the shadow and power of men. But, this does not last very long. These women become bold and outspoken and lead a revolt that will change America forever. They will lead the Woman Suffrage Movement. The barrier of power is now broken. It is the Progressive Era and women are no longer backing down. They have dramatically changed and are no longer sitting down and letti ng men or society have power over them. They have taken charge and have started the woman suffrage movement. This Movement was very necessary and many believed so, it is seen in â€Å"Fourteen Reasons for Supporting Women s

Jonas in Lois Lowry’s The Giver Free Essays

When you hear the word, â€Å"utopia,† you would generally believe that there’s no such thing, impossible to seek something so perfect. We all have those good and bad days. While perhaps that’s true, but in the novel, The Giver, we realize and understand why. We will write a custom essay sample on Jonas in Lois Lowry’s The Giver or any similar topic only for you Order Now It is impossible to take away all threats such as pain, fear, war, and hatred, to mainly create peace among the people. The Giver is written from the perspective of Jonas; an eleven-year-old boy living in a futuristic society that eliminated feelings and memories. Doing so, they pretty much isolated the people living in the community by making them all the same, â€Å"sameness.†Everyone is also incredibly polite. Anyways, Jonas becomes the Receiver of Memory, the most important person who stores all the past memories before sameness to aid the community in making hard decisions with which they are unfamiliar with. The community lacks any color, memory, climate, or terrain, all in the effort to preserve the structure and a true sense of equality. Jonas, unlike others, has the ability to see beyond. And the story shifts from there. While there are many themes in the novel, I understood more and more about memory and why it’s so incredibly important. Memories are important, they are the very key to success. The idea the community had in mind is that without memory, one will not experience painful feelings such as grief, regret, or other feelings that could create conflict with others. While there are bad feelings and memories; there are also many happy ones which provide comfort and love. Somehow, Jonas-bonus was able to have memories of color, creating a plot from there. It all started one day during school, Asher and Jonas were playing catch with an apple. Just for a glimpse, it changed. Not knowing what to say, he demanded pills to take control and stop these recurring changes. While the Giver explains the backstory of the community, we understand more about the societies past and their decision to create or alter to, sameness. Apparently, they eliminated choices because they aren’t safe. For example, the author states, â€Å"There’s much more. There’s all that goes beyond – all that is Elsewhere – and all that goes back, and back, and back. I received all of those, when I was selected. And here in this room, all alone, I re-experience them again and again. It is how wisdom comes. And how we shape our future.† (98) From this detail, we better understood the importance of the Receiver of Memory. While the society made the decision of eliminating feelings, they chose the one worthy person who could eventually overcome the pain and use it for the better good of the community. Pretty much, the pain and dirty work go to Jonas and the Giver, or any other Receiver of Memory. As held in high honor, all he does is aid the community with wisdom so they can react a certain way. What they don’t realize is what would happen after the memories are exposed. Memories can’t be all bad. Sure you might remember something bad every once in a while, but I’m sure that with memories comes improvement. That’s what the community doesn’t understand. Their whole life they have been living behind a rock named, â€Å"memories.†Sacrificing a huge part made the story seem more dystopian. While Jonas was freaking out, the Giver told him the truth about memories and why they were kept away, â€Å"The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.† (193) The problem isn’t the memory itself; it’s the way the society has chosen to deal with it — and react against it. In addition, there is no pleasure without pain. For every pleasure you enjoy, you must suffer some pain, and the pain came from loneliness. This leads me to think, â€Å"why can’t everyone have the memories?†Our mind stores information and reminds us constantly to help us out. And you can’t eliminate that feeling. It’s somewhat similar to dreams and what we take away from them. But because the society is so cowardice they sacrificed the truth about themselves and their past. For instance, according to the to author, â€Å"But why can’t everyone have the memories? I think it would seem a little easier if the memories were shared. You and I wouldn’t have to bear so much by ourselves, if everyone took a part. â€Å"The Giver sighed, â€Å"You’re right,† he said, â€Å"But then everyone would be burdened and pained. They don’t want that. And that’s the real reason The Receiver is so vital to them and so honored. They selected me – and you – to lift that burden from themselves.† (142) The decision was cowardice, but it could have made sense. The price of this action is extremely high: if exposed chaos could occur, but they are filled with wisdom as well. Another example of memories came from the loss of Rosemary, The Giver’s daughter. Rosemary was one of the Receivers of Memories, but she couldn’t handle it at all. Instead, she took her life thinking things would get better. Now the community had feared more of memories. â€Å"All those feelings!† According to the novel, â€Å"Rosemary had only those five weeks worth, and most of them were good ones. But there were those few terrible memories, the ones that overwhelmed her. For a while, they overwhelmed the community. All those feelings! They’d never experienced that before. (180)† Rosemary opened the eyes to those feelings; Jonas too tried. The community made a decision to rule out feelings for this very reason. Imagine every dream filled with horror(most pasts were filled with pain from history). The people knew the truth, that it wasn’t the same years ago. Color, music, and love. Memories are important: they open eyes, they remind us why we keep going every day to achieve that long-awaited goal, they even create new ideas to aid us. Jonas-bonus is unlike his people. He knows and sees the unseen. The absence of color is essential to the story; it creates the problem, memory. The people got rid of memory, or color. And because he sees beyond; he’s different. Memories make us stronger, our vision and our color make us have features(with decisions). Through Jonas and his experience with the Giver, we come to a realization that all memories are equally valuable. To understand true happiness, a person must be able to connect it with something, a similar experience, a memory. Jonas understood happiness when the Giver gave memories of pain and sorrow. Because of all of this — and knowing that Gabe would die without him — Jonas took Gabe away where he would be safe. Jonas loves Gabe, a sign of hope for Jonas. Knowing the consequences, he still stole his â€Å"brother† to create a new life for him where there’s: color, love, and Christmas. In conclusion, memory is a vital part of our everyday life(each and every memory is valuable.). It reminds us every day why we work hard. It gives us an experience and a chance to feel happy. In with pain, out with happiness. While there are many themes in the novel, I understood more about memory and why it’s incredibly crucial. How to cite Jonas in Lois Lowry’s The Giver, Papers

Effects of Outward Foreign Direct Investment Essay Example For Students

Effects of Outward Foreign Direct Investment Essay The Effects of Foreign Direct Investment on the Home CountryForeign Direct Investment (FDI) could be defined as a minimum 10 percent investment of equity or capital by a firm based in one country (home economy) to an enterprise resident in another country (the host economy). The new entity then becomes a multinational enterprise (MNE). Many companies prefer FDI to exporting to gain access to new or larger markets, gain cost advantages in the host country and in response to trade barriers. There has been significant global growth of FDI since 1982. Although the United States is the largest home and host country of FDI, outflows have exceeded inflows. Japan in contrast, receives much less inflows than outflows. Cultural and financial management variations between countries do seem to influence the direction of FDI flow. Strategic governmental trade policies in recent years have supported the globalization to a more efficient world economy. Companies often get governmental assistance in attaining international economies of scale and first mover advantages. The huge inflows of FDI into the United States could be due to the falling value of the dollar in the late 1980s and early 1990s indicating exchange rates play a significant role in the choice of either horizontal or vertical FDI opportunities over exporting. Honda successfully used vertical FDI in the 1980s by establishing high quality operations in the United States. The company utilized U.S. suppliers for machine tools and parts capitalizing on currency exchange rates and local responsiveness. FDI is often preferred over licensing in the high technology or specialized industries, and in many cost sensitive industries. Significant research is necessary to evaluate the advantages of trade vehicles and their effects on the home country. Parent companies lobby for governmental policies that support free trade in order to gain competitive advantages in developing global markets. Many businesses suffer losses for m any years focusing on long-term growth potential. This paper will analyze the possible effects of FDI on the home country. Home country governments influence the ability of firms to invest in foreign countries. The radical view of FDI was popular until the end of the 1980s, and equated to the economic domination by companies rather than the economic development of nations. Radical policies were prevalent in communist countries and in Latin America in the 1960s-1970s. Radical regimes regularly expropriated multi-national companies and prohibited outward FDI. The collapse of communism, and the growth of the free market view marked the beginning of policies encouraging capital and technology transfers. The Smith and Ricardo Market Imperfections approach to FDI, involves maximizing gains and minimizing the costs of FDI. Most countries have adopted policies somewhere between the radical and free market approach, while still imposing some restrictions on outward FDI (Pragmatic nationalism). There are many potential benefits of FDI on the home country. Improvement in the balance of payments can be realized throu gh increased inward earnings, potential home country exports and foreign expertise that can be transferred back to the home economy. Opportunities to be exposed to new work practices and technology, can aid the home economy in managing and exploiting technology and knowledge-based assets. Higher living standards are also a general long-term benefit of outward FDI, due to the added value characteristics of comparative advantage, and more affordable products and services. Outward FDI could also detract from a home countrys capital stock. A negative balance of payments is possible if earnings arent realized in an acceptable time period. Also, if FDI is a substitute for direct exports or aimed at serving the home market from a low cost location, the balance of payments could be adversely affected. It could be argued however, that home country exports could be displaced over time by host country production whether it is by another foreign competitor or local companies opening their own d omestic operations. Thus, the opportunity cost is a loss of potential first mover advantage, as well as the loss of existing exports. In most cases studied, outward FDI results in complementary increases in exports over time, offering home country comparative advantages through efficiently organizing production to supply growing foreign markets. Reduced home country employment is an issue when FDI is substituted for domestic production (offshore production). Long-term home country resources are best utilized where they can add the most value and offer a comparative advantage. The impact of investment depends on whether the home countrys comparative advantage is in research and development, natural resources, or skilled labor-intensive industries. If efficiencies are realized then generally consumers of the home country benefit from reduced product prices. There is great wage disparity between the United States and many developing countries. It could be argued that outward FDI flow h as created a higher emphasis and value on the research and development class in relation to the unskilled class of workers in the United States. It is the role of government to balance the inefficiencies through policies that promote long-term consumer benefits of the home country. Assisting employees through educational assistance programs and training is one possible solution to elevating the lower skilled workforce. .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 , .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .postImageUrl , .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 , .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:hover , .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:visited , .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:active { border:0!important; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:active , .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Road Not Taken EssayGovernments can encourage and restrict FDI in their home countries. Encouragement is offered in policies toward foreign risk insurance, financing arrangements, tax incentives, and pressuring foreign governments to remove trade barriers. Capital flow control restrictions are used in attaining balance of payments and in limiting funding of foreign investments. Many governments also utilize manipulation of tax rules in order to encourage firms to invest in the home country. Political disruptions or prohibitions in trading with certain countries are other ways that FDI outflows are restricted. World leaders have removed many restrictions on FDI in recent years resulting in phenomenal growth in the movement of capital. Capital abundance has been associated with countries that have lower interest rates and strong currencies as evidenced by the United States economy over the past twelve years. The Uruguay round of GATT and more recently the policies of the World Trade Organization (WTO) have included the services and intellectual property policies which now accounts for over half of all investment flows. Outward FDI is a strategic option that firms can now utilize for comparative advantages and increasing the home countrys national economy. Small countries for instance have small local markets and need to invest abroad for future economic growth and to fight against foreign competition. Home countries are also more inclined to plan production in countries that are near the developing customer base, decreasing transportation costs and enabling greater growth in attainment of e conomies of scale. Its important that the WTO and home country governments include issues such as human rights and environmental regulations when analyzing the trade-offs of outward FDI. In conclusion, it is apparent that outward FDI will continue to be a vehicle that companies will pursue in gaining comparative economic advantages resulting in higher revenues and profit growth. Customers should benefit from competition, which supports downward pricing, and the home countrys desire to get closer to their foreign customers thereby adapting to their preferences and production standards (local responsiveness). Relationship studies have shown a complementary correlation between outward FDI and exports. The benefits to the home country are even greater when both countries have strong currencies, low interest rates and an increasing GNP. Home country governments must analyze their balance of payments, and associated global risks when constructing outward FDI policies in serving its own na tional economic interests. Less Is More free essay sample

They always told me that â€Å"the more, the merrier†. This principle guided my life for a solid thirteen years. â€Å"Well,† I thought, â€Å"the more video games I have, the merrier I will be, the more candy I eat, the merrier I will be, the more friends I have, the merrier I will be.† I lived in Germany for almost four years, where portion sizes are enormous and speed limits are extremely high. My mom’s side of the family is Italian, and they are always telling me to put a little more meat on my bones. I never thought that I could be happy with so little. Albania has changed that. Albania is a developing country, with aspects that fit the definition of a third-world nation. I have lived here for nearly two years, and this country has changed my life dramatically. Many Albanians live with very little. The average job pays about 2 dollars an hour. We will write a custom essay sample on Less Is More or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Most families live in small houses and apartments. Coffees are never even close to the size of a Starbucks â€Å"tall†. The average family has only one car, usually a run-down sedan (and if they can’t afford a car, four-person families will pack onto one motor scooter). Despite all this, Albanians are some of the happiest people I have seen in my life. They are not bothered by the fact that they have so little. Instead, they do whatever they want to do. They will always invite friends into their house for coffee. They will greet familiar faces on the streets with a smile. They are very happy with the lives that they lead. This way of life has changed the way I lead my own life. No longer do I long for the newest video game system, no longer do I long for a Super-Sized Big Mac, no longer do I long to visit an American movie theater. Sure, I occasionally want a root beer or something truly American, but I have suppressed that urge. No longer will I guide my life on the principle of â€Å"the more, the merrier†. Now, I believe that less is more.

Replacement for and replacement of

Replacement for and replacement of Replacement for and replacement of Replacement for and replacement of By Maeve Maddox Prepositions and particles are tricky in any language. Its not an easy matter to explain why some words are followed by to while others are followed by in or for. The native speaker just knows. Recently, Ive noticed the use of to with the word replacement where Id expect for or of. Homeopathy as replacement to antibiotics†¦ Offers a cost effective replacement to broken parcel shelf string†¦ i have lost 12v ac 2.4 power adapter when moving home and am looking for a replacement to said item†¦ The two most frequent meanings of replacement are a person who or thing which replaces another; a substitute. The action or an act of replacing something When replacement is used in the first sense, its synonymous with substitute. For that reason, for is the obvious choice: I need a replacement for my windshield wiper. We need a replacement for Mr. Jones the math teacher. It seems to me that in all three of the examples given above, for is the obvious choice: Homeopathy as a replacement (substitute) for antibiotics†¦ cost effective replacement (substitute) for broken parcel shelf string†¦ looking for a replacement (substitute) for said item. Used in the second sense, replacement is followed by of. Requests for the issuance or replacement of military service medals†¦ Operations involve either metal pinning with screws and/or plates or replacement of the hip joint with artificial parts†¦ Thats not to say that to must never follow the word replacement. The word is often followed by an infinitive: Sansoms replacement to be decided today†¦ SMPT gateway replacement to make mail testing easier Sometimes replacement is followed by a prepositional phrase beginning with to: Procedure now calls for the mayor to nominate a replacement to the board†¦ Budget woes delay shuttle replacement to 2015 However, in these examples, the to phrases do not qualify replacement; they modify the verbs: the shuttle replacement is being delayed to 2015; the mayors choice will be nominated to the board. Whats the consensus? Is replacement to instead of replacement for a regional thing, or an aberration? Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Oath of Allegiance to the United States

Oath of Allegiance to the United States The Oath of Allegiance to the United States, legally called the â€Å"Oath of Allegiance,† is required under federal law to be sworn to by all immigrants who wish to become naturalized citizens of the United States. The complete Oath of Allegiance states: I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure (or renounce) all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God. The basic principles of U.S. citizenship embodied in the Oath of Allegiance include: Supporting the Constitution;Renouncing all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which the applicant was previously a subject or citizen;Supporting and defending the Constitution and laws of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic;Bearing true faith and allegiance to the Constitution and laws of the United States; and Bearing arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; orPerforming noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; orPerforming work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law. Under the law, the Oath of Allegiance may be administered only by officials of the U.S. Customs and Immigration Services (USCIS); immigration judges; and eligible courts. History of the Oath The first use of an oath of allegiance was recorded during the Revolutionary War when new officers in the Continental Army were required by Congress to disavow any allegiance or obedience to England’s King George the Third. The Naturalization Act of 1790, required immigrants applying for citizenship simply to agree â€Å"to support the Constitution of the United States.† The Naturalization Act of 1795 added the requirement that immigrants renounce the leader or â€Å"sovereign† of their native country. The Naturalization Act of 1906 along with creating the federal government’s first official Immigration Service, added wording to the oath requiring new citizens to swear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution and to defend it against all enemies, foreign and domestic. In 1929, the Immigration Service standardized the language of the Oath. Prior to then, each immigration court was free to develop its own wording and method of administering the Oath. The section in which applicants swear to bear arms and perform non-combat service in the U.S. armed forces was added to the Oath by the Internal Security Act of 1950, and the section about performing work of national importance under civilian direction was added by the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952. How the Oath Could be Changed The current exact wording of the Oath of Citizenship is established by a presidential executive order. However, the Customs and Immigration Service could, under the Administrative Procedure Act, change the text of the Oath at any time, provided that the new wording reasonably meets the following â€Å"five principals† required by Congress: Allegiance to the United States ConstitutionRenunciation of allegiance to any foreign country to which the immigrant has had previous allegiancesDefense of the Constitution against enemies foreign and domesticPromise to serve in the United States Armed Forces when required by law (either combat or non-combat)Promise to perform civilian duties of national importance when required by law Exemptions to the Oath Federal law allows prospective new citizens to claim two exemptions when taking the Oath of Citizenship: Consistent with the First Amendment’s assurance of religious freedom, the phrase â€Å"so help me God† is optional and the phrase â€Å"and solemnly affirm† can be substituted for the phrase â€Å"on oath.†Should the prospective citizen be unwilling or unable to vow to bear arms or perform non-combat military service because of their â€Å"religious training and belief,† they may omit those clauses. The law specifies that the exemption from vowing to bear arms or perform non-combat military service must be based solely on the applicant’s belief in relation to a â€Å"Supreme Being,† rather than on any political, sociological, or philosophical views or a personal moral code. In claiming this exemption, applicants may be required to provide supporting documentation from their religious organization. While the applicant is not required to belong to a specific religious group, he or she must establish â€Å"a sincere and meaningful belief that has a place in the applicant’s life that is equivalent to that of a religious belief.†

Analysis on how healthcare is delivered in the United States as Essay

Analysis on how healthcare is delivered in the United States as compared to how healthcare is delivered in three other countries - Essay Example to healthcare delivery in United Kingdom (National Health System/Service), the Netherlands (Socialized Health Insurance), and Canada (National Health Insurance). The United States is a capitalist nation and this has been transferred to healthcare delivery, i.e., the patient has to pay for the service as they receive it from the doctor. According to Tanner (2008), this is an indicator that healthcare in the U.S is private-based with an estimated 85% of the population covered by insurance plans. Private companies exist in the U.S to provide health insurance where clients pay monthly fee for insurance and the company pays the client’s doctor for services rendered. Clients pay according to the risk they are willing to insure; thus, if a client pays more for an expense, then the company will charge less for the insurance and vice versa (Tanner, 2008). Most employers in the U.S pay for worker’s insurance which is considered as an employment benefit that adds up to the employee’s salary. However, few Americans can pay for their own insurance owing to high cost relative to their income. Another insurance provider is the government itself as it allocates considerable funds from the budget to healthcare programs. In addition, Tanner (2008) asserts that those who are not insured as a result of poverty receive medical cover via Medicaid which is funded by both the federal and state taxes. On the other hand, the aged and children receive medical cover via Medicare which is funded by taxes from federal income. Of all the developed countries, the U.S is believed to have the highest medical expenses (Tanner, 2008). This is another capitalist country which applies the fee-for-service system of medical delivery only that the administration of the plan is done by government entities (Tanner, 2008). This system sees the healthcare services of the country covered universally and coverage for all citizens is achieved for all ten provinces. In Canada, Tanner (2008) reveals that

At the beginning go of the 20th century, international relations became an important and discrete academic sector in political science. These interactions are believed to have started taking place around 3500 BC. When based on sovereign states, the history regarding international relations can be followed back to the time of Westphalia in 1648. Before this particular development, organizations in political authorities in the European medieval period were depended on some kind of vaguely developed hierarchical religious orders.

Personal And Professional Skills Identification Personal Development Essay In order for any manager or leader to achieve the goals set for themselves as well as the goals set for the organization, possessing appropriate skills are most important aspect. Before we can understand the important of either managerial skills or leadership skills (both personal as well as professional skills), we need to understand as to what differentiates these two professional positions from each other. Understanding the meaning of a leader- Leader is a person who not only helps the organization reach its goals but also helps to develop people at the same time. A leader is said to be a person who does the right things at the right time. Leadership is all about effectiveness. Leadership is all about innovation, inspiration and motivation. Understanding the meaning of a Manager- A manager is an entity in organization who helps to direct the actions of the employees or the members to achieve the organizational goals. A Manager is all about doing the things right and its all about efficiency. Manager is all about managing the resources of the organization. Understanding the common and unique differences between a leader and a manager will help us to understand the skills that are required in the organization: A manager believes in administration whereas a leader goes for innovation. Manager is all about organizing and scheduling but leadership is all about motivating the people in the organisation. A manager at the end of the day has employees working under him or her but for a leader, they have people who wants to becomes like them in future. A manager always ensures that the short term goals are achieved first but a leader wants to ensure that the short term goals are acheived in such a way that they help is achieving the long term goals. A manager works to ensure the stability in the business but a leader looks out for changes that can bring about the stability in the business. Personal and Professional Skills- Now as we know the difference between a manager and leader, we need to understand some of the personal and the professional skills that are important in an organization. Personal skills includes effective communication, being accountable and dependable, adaptable and appropriate work place behavior etc. Professional skills includes effective communication, time management, conducting and being part of meetings, managing stress at workplace, preparing appropriate presentations, management of performance and observation of performance, motivations and stabilization at work place. In order to understand the Manager role in a professional environment we will focus on four major skills that every potential Manager is expected to possess in an organization and these skills are: Time Management skills- Time is a very important aspect for any business. Effective management of time is essential for success of any organization or even a project. A manager can effectively manage time if they concentrate on the important aspects of the business or the organization first and then keep the other factors secondary. Effective management of time not only helps us understand what many say Time is money as well as stress reduction can be due to effective time management. (Marc Mancini, 2007) There are many options available for managers to effectively manage there time, they need to understand the priority of the work that has been assigned to them and ensure that they are working efficiently to deliver the required work on time rather then wasting the time on some work which is currently not important. A manager can also manage time if the work has been organized and distributed properly. If we take an example, Toyota works on the principle of JIT (Just in Time) and they are a very successful company known for there quality and on time work. If a person can learn to effectively manage their time, they are on their way to achieve their goals. But before a person can learn to manage time, they need to be aware of the factors that can affect the time management. These factors will include Unorganized work format, inappropriate judgment for delivery of the work, Not giving the complete attention to the current work and delaying it by working on something else at the same time. Conducting meetings- Conducting meetings or being part of the meetings are one of daily roles of a manager. Meeting is the forum through which gathered members or the people not only discuss and understand any situation but also try and develop ideas to decide on any issue. It is the responsibility of the manager to ensure that he or she carries and arranges meeting in such a way that the end result leads out to an effective meeting (be the purpose of the meeting was informal talk or formal data communication). Depending on the reason or the purpose of the meeting, there can be many advantages that can be derived out of the meetings. When ever there is any formal or informal meeting, the Manager always has an edge over the members of the meeting. An effective manager utilizes meetings for not only relaying information to the co-workers but also to brain storm to generate ideas pertaining to there departments. We need to always remember that in a meeting it is not necessary that all the members will come with the same opinion. An effective manager uses the meeting as a forum to not only strengthen his team on the whole but also to give individual attention to the members of the team. On the whole meetings always help to develop good work place environment through good working relations. An effective manager is expected to have conducted an effective meeting if they have first and foremost achieved the main objective and idea behind conducting the meeting. In order to achieve this the manager needs to ensure that the members of the meeting are not only aware about the entire schedule of the meeting but also have information on the content of the meeting. An effective manager not only conveys all the information accurately but also ensures that the opinions of the members of the meeting is gathered at the end. Preparing presentation- Preparing and giving presentation is another important skill that is required for any manager. Presentation skills are just not important for managers, it is an essential aspects in every field of work in todays world. Presentation is a skills through a manager not only relays important information to the co-workers but also effectively utilizes various tools like Optics and graphics to get into the details of the information. On the whole apart from the members of the presentation meeting the effectiveness of the presentation also is very critical. Every presentations should ensure that it understands that viewpoint and connects to the people involved in the presentation. Time is one of the most important aspect in presentations, the presenter needs to ensure that the time is utilized effectively in the presentation. Stress management skills- Skills that help and aid in managing the stress effectively are known as stress management skills. In simple terms stress can be defined as the response that is generated by our body depending on positive or negative conditions of outside or inside pressure. If we ignore the conditions and reasons for the stress, it can lead to lack of concentration and and difficult to work. Depending on the causes of the stress, they can be classified into different categories Stress caused due to survival factor- People have heard that the survival of the fittest, and this can lead to serious stress among the people. This can be applied in personal or even professional place. Stress caused due to internal or personal factors- This stress factors can be caused due to any personal reasons, financial problems, family problem anything. Ensure latest technologies are utilized to enhance the presentation (visual aids). Always keep everyone involved in the presentation and keep eye contact with everyone while giving presentation. Always ensure that you have practiced the presentation well in advance to avoid any anxiety. Methods for the development of stress Management Skills In order to develop the stress management skills, first learn to understand the reason which is leading to stressful situation. Either you can avoid the things which are causing stress or try and adjust yourself to that situation which will reduce stress. Another method is either to change the cause of stress or accept the cause of stress. Avoid negative methods to manage stress, adapt healthy way for stress management. Outcome 2. Evaluation of Personal Skills through Audit Task 3. Personal Skill auditing Every person has there own way and approach of learning things in life, these approaches can be considered as the individual learning style. A manager is expected to understand there method and style of learning things and turning the negatives into positives. Individual specific learning style helps them to make and alter there weaknesses into their strength through every action that they take. After long understanding and thinking, I can say that I have a Learning style which is combination of being Theorist as well as Linguistic. Depending on my learning style, I have performed the below audit to highlight my strength and weaknesses. Skills Strength Weakness Organized P Communication P Time Management P Management of Stress P Delegation P Meetings and Presentations P Efficient and Self confident P Learning methodology P Interpersonal communication P Technological skills P Coaching and mentoring P Learn from experience P Logical thinking skills P We we take a look, we can clearly see that there are quite a few noticeable weakness in my learning style. These weakness can lead to non effective performance of the manager. The weakness are always a hindrance in a work place towards success. If we take a look at the people and the businesses which are currently blooming, they have got success as they have studied from there past experiences and changed their weakness into their strength. Performance in a business world is the key to success and survival. Now after understanding and performing the self audit for the skills, there weakness which can affect the development of the four skills mentioned earlier are: Communication- Communicating in an effective way is crucial for manager. This weakness can affect all the four skills like Time management, Stress management, Meeting and presentations skills. Communication is the backbone for the proper development of the skills. A manager needs to communicate clearly about the work in hand and the time it will consume to reduce the stress later on. Communicating effectively is the main factor to turn the meeting and presentation important and meaningful. Delegation- This is one weakness which can have an impact on Time management as well as Stress management development. During the course of the development plan, I feel that I am not only try to communicate to a lot of people but also trying to encourage my co-workers through assigning tasks to them. This is not only helping them to develop their skills but also reducing the stress from me but also Im saving a lot of time for other works. Due to the development plan, I have able to think logically and come up with ideas for the development of the department as well as the co-workers.
